Non-slip floor coatings are a popular bathroom safety modification. They can be a relatively quick and cost-effective way to improve grip on a slippery floor without the disruption of removing and replacing existing tiles.
For the right surface, they can work extremely well.
However, not every tile is suitable for a non-slip coating. Highly glossy tiles, polished surfaces and some types of marble can present problems when it comes to achieving a durable, even finish.
Understanding this before recommending or proceeding with a non-slip treatment can help avoid unnecessary cost and ensure the most appropriate solution is chosen for the client.
Why Glossy Tiles Can Be a Problem

The main challenge with glossy tiles and polished marble is that the surface is extremely smooth and non-porous.
Non-slip coatings need to form a strong bond with the existing surface. On a more porous or slightly textured tile, there is generally more opportunity for the treatment to adhere effectively.
A highly polished or sealed surface can make this much more difficult.
This means that even when the coating is applied correctly, the underlying tile may simply not provide a suitable surface for a reliable, long-lasting result.
What Can Happen If the Surface Isn’t Suitable?
Applying a non-slip coating to an unsuitable surface can lead to several problems.
- An uneven or blotchy finish
Rather than creating a consistent finish across the floor, the coating may appear patchy, streaky or uneven. - Reduced durability
If the coating cannot properly bond to the tile, it may wear or deteriorate much sooner than expected — particularly in wet or frequently used areas such as bathrooms and showers. - Unnecessary cost
A treatment that doesn’t perform as intended may need to be replaced or another solution considered, adding further cost and inconvenience for the client.
This is why assessing the existing flooring before recommending a non-slip coating is so important.
What Are the Alternatives?
If a non-slip coating isn’t appropriate for the existing tiles, there may be other ways to improve bathroom safety.
Non-slip mats
A suitable non-slip mat can provide additional grip in key wet areas without altering the existing flooring.
It’s a simple and non-permanent option that may be appropriate depending on the client’s individual circumstances and needs.
Retiling with slip-resistant tiles
Where a more permanent solution is required, replacing glossy flooring with an appropriate slip-resistant or textured tile may be considered.
While this involves more substantial works, it can provide a longer-term solution where the existing surface isn’t suitable for treatment.
A Note for Occupational Therapists
When considering bathroom safety modifications for a client, the existing tile finish can influence which solutions are practical.
Identifying glossy, polished or non-porous flooring during the assessment process can help determine whether a non-slip coating is likely to be appropriate or whether an alternative should be considered.
Complete Assist can assess the existing surface and provide advice on suitable options before works proceed, helping OTs and clients make an informed decision.
Choosing the Right Solution for the Surface
Non-slip coatings can be an excellent bathroom safety solution, when they’re applied to a suitable surface.
Where glossy tiles, polished marble or other non-porous surfaces are present, it’s important to assess the flooring first rather than assuming a coating will be appropriate.
If you’re unsure whether a non-slip treatment is suitable for your client’s bathroom, contact the Complete Assist team. We can assess the existing flooring and discuss the available options.
