Every home is different, and so is every accessibility solution. Below are answers to some of the questions we’re most commonly asked about access ramps. As we continue to add more home modification projects and helpful resources, we’ll keep expanding this section with practical advice to help you make informed decisions about improving safety and accessibility around your home.
Yes. In many cases, an access ramp can be installed without the need for major building work. At Complete Assist, we assess your home’s layout and recommend a solution that works with your existing entrance, helping improve accessibility while keeping disruption to a minimum.
The best material depends on your home, budget and how the ramp will be used. We often recommend ModWood composite decking because it’s durable, low maintenance and designed to withstand Australian weather conditions. Unlike traditional timber, it won’t splinter, rot or require regular painting or staining, making it an excellent long-term option for many homeowners.
ModWood is available with textured, slip-resistant surface finishes that provide improved grip underfoot. Combined with the correct ramp design and professional installation, it creates a safer access solution for everyday use. As with any outdoor surface, keeping the ramp clean and free of leaves or moss will help maintain the best level of safety.
ModWood is designed to provide many years of reliable performance with minimal maintenance. Because it’s made from a blend of recycled wood fibres and recycled plastic, it won’t rot, warp or splinter like traditional timber can over time. This makes it an ideal choice for homeowners looking for a durable, long-lasting accessibility solution.
Absolutely. Every home is different, so every access ramp should be designed to suit the property and the person using it. We custom-build ramps to fit your available space while considering safety, accessibility and the overall appearance of your home. Our goal is to create a practical solution that blends seamlessly with your existing outdoor area.
Not always. While many bathrooms can accommodate grab rails, there are some situations where installation may not be possible or may require an alternative solution. Grab rails must be securely fixed into suitable timber wall studs to ensure they can safely support a person’s weight. Before installation, we’ll assess your bathroom and explain the best options for your home.
A cavity sliding door sits inside the wall, which means the normal timber wall studs have been removed or modified to create space for the door to slide. Without suitable timber framing behind the wall, there’s nowhere safe to securely fix a weight-bearing grab rail. If this is the case, we’ll discuss alternative locations or solutions that still improve safety.
Sometimes, but not always. Many fibreglass and acrylic shower enclosures sit away from the wall, leaving a gap between the shower shell and the wall framing. This often means there are no accessible timber studs behind the shower where a grab rail can be safely installed. We’ll inspect the shower construction and recommend the safest option for your bathroom.
In most cases, no. Australian Standard AS 1428 requires weight-bearing grab rails to be fixed to suitable timber studs. Standard metal wall framing isn’t designed to support the forces placed on a grab rail. However, some homes and many retirement villages include timber reinforcement around bathroom walls. If that’s the case, we can often confirm this with the building manager or through an on-site assessment before proceeding.
Yes, in many cases they can. Thick marble tiles can make it difficult for electronic stud finders to locate the timber framing behind the wall. If the tiles don’t extend to the ceiling, we can often locate the studs from the plasterboard above. If there’s access to the opposite side of the wall, we may also be able to identify the stud locations that way. Every bathroom is different, so we’ll assess the wall construction before recommending the safest installation method.
