When a Standard Grab Rail Installation Isn’t Possible
It was extremely important for our client’s safety to have a grab rail installed in the shower that extended the full length of the wall, providing continuous support when entering, exiting and moving around the shower area.
During installation, however, we encountered a common challenge. While grab rails must be securely fixed to structural supports within the wall, we were unable to locate a suitable wall stud near the edge of the shower screen where the rail ideally needed to finish.
Rather than compromising on safety or functionality, our installer Terry worked closely with the Occupational Therapist to develop an alternative solution. Together, they agreed on a cantilever-style design that allowed the rail to be securely fixed to a stud located closer to the centre of the wall, while incorporating a 250mm overhang to extend the rail as close to the shower entrance as possible.
This approach ensured the rail remained strong, safe and fit for purpose, while still providing the support the client needed. It’s a great example of how collaboration between installers and Occupational Therapists can overcome site-specific challenges and achieve the best possible outcome for the client.
Every home is different, and sometimes the best accessibility solutions require a little creativity and problem-solving.
