The 4 Most Common Reasons We Can’t Install a Grab Rail in Your Bathroom

Installing a grab rail is one of the simplest ways to improve bathroom safety and confidence at home. However, there are occasions where a standard installation isn’t possible due to the way the bathroom was originally constructed.

At Complete Assist, we always assess each bathroom carefully before installation. Safety is our priority, and if a grab rail can’t be installed securely, we’ll explain why and discuss alternative solutions where possible.

Here are the four most common reasons.

1. The Wall Contains a Cavity Sliding Door

One of the most common issues we encounter is a cavity sliding door hidden inside the wall.

Unlike a standard wall, a cavity slider requires the wall framing to be modified to allow the door to slide inside. This means there are often no suitable timber studs where the grab rail needs to be installed.

Because grab rails are designed to support a person’s body weight, they must be fixed into solid structural framing. Without this support, the rail could fail when it is needed most.

If a cavity slider is present, we’ll look at alternative locations or discuss other safety options that may suit your bathroom.

2. Fibreglass or Acrylic Shower Enclosures

Many bathrooms feature a prefabricated fibreglass or acrylic shower enclosure rather than tiled walls.

These shower shells typically sit slightly away from the building wall, leaving a gap between the enclosure and the timber framing behind it.

Because of this gap, there is often no way to securely fasten a standard grab rail through the enclosure into the structural wall.

Depending on the bathroom layout, there may be other suitable wall locations outside the shower where a rail can still be safely installed.

3. Metal Wall Framing Instead of Timber

Many newer homes, apartments and retirement villages are constructed using metal wall frames instead of traditional timber studs.

Under Australian Standard AS 1428, weight-bearing grab rails must be fixed to suitable structural support. Thin metal framing generally does not provide the strength required for a safe installation.

In some retirement villages and modern homes, builders install timber reinforcement around the perimeter of the bathroom specifically for future grab rail installations.

Where this may be the case, we’ll often consult with the building manager or review available building information before determining whether installation is possible.

4. Thick Marble or Stone Tiles

Natural stone and marble bathrooms can sometimes present another challenge.

Standard electronic stud finders are unable to detect timber framing through thick stone tiles, making it difficult to accurately locate the wall studs needed for installation.

Fortunately, this doesn’t always mean a grab rail can’t be installed.

If the marble doesn’t extend to the ceiling, we can often locate the studs using the plaster wall above the tiles. Alternatively, if we have access to the opposite side of the wall, we may be able to identify the stud locations from there.

Every bathroom is different, so we’ll always investigate the available options before ruling out an installation.

Safety Always Comes First

Although these situations can make installation more challenging, our priority is always ensuring any grab rail is installed safely and securely.

If we determine that a standard installation isn’t suitable, we’ll explain the reasons clearly and discuss any alternative solutions that may improve safety in your bathroom.

Every home is different, which is why we recommend an on-site assessment before any installation is carried out.
