Accessible shower with curtain replacing shower screen

Can you remove shower doors safely?

Removing shower doors is one of the most common bathroom modifications used to improve accessibility and create easier, safer access to the shower area. However, it’s not always as simple as removing the entire shower screen.

When assessing a shower modification, we first consider the style and construction of the existing screen. In many cases, we recommend leaving the outer frame in place and removing all or some of the sliding glass panels. For showers with a pivoting door and fixed side panel, we typically remove the door while leaving the fixed glass panel in position.

There are several reasons for this approach. Leaving the frame in place helps maintain structural support for any remaining glass panels and reduces the risk of movement or damage. It also helps preserve the existing waterproofing system. Once a frame is removed, it can reveal screw holes, gaps in grout, mismatched tiles or other cosmetic issues that may require additional repairs.

By retaining as much of the original structure as possible, we can often achieve the accessibility outcome while minimising disruption, reducing costs and maintaining the appearance of the bathroom.

A common question we receive is whether the shower doors can be reinstalled in the future. In most cases, yes. If there is a possibility that the modification may only be temporary, we can retain the removed glass panels and hardware for future reinstallation. If this is important to the client, it should be noted in the Occupational Therapist’s report so our team knows to leave the panels on site.

A little help goes a long way.
